Did you know?

In african culture: if the groom had fertility problems the father in law would make the bride pregnant, since most men would work far from home the father in law would sleep with the bride and just after that they would call the groom to come home knowing they will mate, this then resulted in the bride getting pregnant! the whole point was to save the marriage, so the groom would think he has made his wife pregnant but actual fact it’s the grooms father who did this for him, and of course the groom was never told!!

EVENTS YOU CAN ATTEND:

 *FINE BRANDY FUSION*

Share the spirit at Fine Brandy Fusion, South Africa's top trend-creating drinks event.
Marking its fifth anniversary the vibrant Fine Brandy Fusion (previously the Fine Brandy Festival) hints at the array of delightful fusions used to create our unique brandies as well as the fusions of cultures and styles it celebrates.

Part social happening, part learning experience, this keystone event reflects brandy's refined and its fun side. This exciting format will see high-end lifestyle brands, music and brandy-loving food fuse with famous brandy houses and artisanal estate brandies.

This year's Fine Brandy Fusion highlights the incredible run of accolades earned by local brandies at the International Wine & Spirits Competition (IWSC) over the past three decades. Festival guests can get confirmation why no fewer than 13 local brandies have won the Worldwide Best Brandy trophy, including the past five years in succession.

Brandy has also found its mojo in the modern mixing of taste-shaping cocktails recognising brandy's extraordinary versatility. Explore these trend-forward concoctions at the Fusion Bar and discover what fun can be had with South African brandy.

The overwhelming success of the tutored tasting and master classes initiated last year sees the further expansion of the programme, under the auspices of Dave Hughes, a master distiller and international wine and spirits judge.

Fine Brandy Fusion supports moderate and responsible enjoyment of brandy. Corporate Cab services are available.

*Knysna Oyster Festival*

When: Friday, 06 July 2012 to Sunday, 15 July 2012
Where: Knysna
Categories: Annual Festivals / Entertainment / Food & Wine / Outdoor Events

The Knysna Oyster Festival is probably one of the most popular annual events in the Western Cape. It is also something of a celebration of the good life and sport and has taken place every year since 1983, where it began as the Knysna Winter Festival - a combination of sport that drew people to Knysna during the quiet winter season.

Marketed as the 'Best 10 Days of Your Winter', the Knysna Oyster festival is spread across two weekends that promise constant fun and activities for the whole family. The sport aspect of the Oyster Festival has evolved into two major sporting events - the Pick n Pay Cape Times Forest Marathon (half marathon), and the Pick n Pay Weekend Argus Rotary Cycle Tour, now a two-day event that is the biggest of its kind in the country.

The 2010 Knysna Oyster Festival promises almost 100 mid-week events that include some exciting new additions: The Geo Oyster Geocaching Competition (a fun way to navigate around the greater Knysna Basin), the Pick n Pay Fun Event for the disabled (the first time the Oyster Festival is hosting a sports event for disabled competitors), the Navigation Drift Dive Challenge (an attempt by scuba divers to navigate their way under water from The Heads to Thesen's Jetty without surfacing), and the Night of 1 000 Pictures (two-night exhibition of photography, illustrations and paintings to raise funds for the Knysna Hospice by local artists).

Other mid-week events will include the Wade Bales Wine Festival, the Pick n Pay Oyster and Wine Mardi Gras, the Knysna Lyster Company Shucking Competition and sports events such as the Scottish Leader Whisky Bowls Tournament and the Protea Hotel Knysna Quays Waitron Race.
But of course the stars of the show are undoubtedly the oysters, served naked, cooked or garnished at over 30 local Tabasco Hotspots throughout the festival.

*Speedo Ice Swim Africa*

When: Dates to be confirmed (Monday, 23 July 2012)
Where: Fraserburg
Categories: Sporting Events

Six cold water veterans and up to 30 other extreme swimmers are set for one of the coldest swims in Africa when they plunge into an icy dam in Fraserburg, near Sutherland in mid winter for the first Speedo Ice Swim Africa

Wearing only Speedo costumes, swimming caps and goggles, the six veterans who include world record holders Ram Barkai and Theodore Yach will attempt to swim a mile on July 23 in bone-chilling Nuwedam in remote Fraserburg, near Sutherland, Northern Cape – one of the coldest regions in Africa. The dam temperature is expected to plummet to below 5C at the time.

Fraserburg is a five hour drive from Cape Town and is one of the most authentic, well preserved and coldest towns in the Karoo.

The brainchild of Barkai who holds a Guinness World Record for having undertaken the world’s most southerly swim (a kilometre in an icy lake, 1C, in Antarctica in early 2008) the event is a first for Africa and part of Barkai’s goal to undertake an ice swim (5C or colder) on every continent.
In addition to the mile, 30 other newcomers to “ice” swimming, but all regular cold water swimmers, will attempt a shorter Endurance Swim of 600m in Nuwedam. Both swims are set for Saturday 23 July, usually the coldest time of the year in the area, with temperatures plummeting to minus 10 degrees Celsius or below some nights.

Please Note: Dates for this event to be confirmed.

Grahamstown National Arts Festival

When: Thursday, 28 June 2012 to Sunday, 08 July 2012
Where: Grahamstown
The Grahamstown National Arts Festival: Africa's largest and most colourful cultural event offers a choice of the very best of both indigenous and imported talent. Every year for 11 days (June/July) Grahamstown's population almost doubles, as over 50 000 people flock to Grahamstown in the Eastern Cape for a feast of arts, crafts and sheer entertainment.

Every hall or large room becomes a theatre, parks and sport fields become flea markets, normally quiet streets have to be managed by an army of temporary traffic wardens, and every available bed in the city is booked. The festival offers more than 500 shows from opera, cabaret, drama and jazz to stand-up comics and folk music.

From theatre to dance, opera to cabaret, fine art to craft art, classical music to jazz, poetry readings to lectures, every art form imaginable is represented in one of the most diverse festivals in the world. And there's something for every taste, with techno raves, mediaeval banquets, craft fairs, cyber cafes, carnivals, buskers and walking tours.

While many come to take in the arts, others simply want to be here for the spectacle or to market products ranging from tie-dyed T-shirts and woven rugs to handmade jewellery and customized telephones. The festival operates out of the 1820 Settlers National Monument and is organized by the Grahamstown Foundation.
